News

First look at Panasonic GH5 firmware 2.0

eosHD.com has the scoop on Panasonic’s GH5 firmware 2.0. You’ve must have heard about it, bug fixes and optimalisation, but ofcourse also a ton of features;

  • Professional 400Mbit ALL-I intraframe codec for 10bit 4K 4:2:2
  • “Open Gate” High Resolution Anamorphic Mode (4992 x 3744)
  • Hybrid Log Gamma with view assist feature for HDR shooting
  • New and improved autofocus engine for video

If you ask me, 400 Mbit All-I is a massive game changer, in-camera(!!) I’ll need to buy some new cards, but I’m definitely getting in on the GH5 now!

Canon Releases breakthrough 85mm f1.4 IS lens

Aside from releasing 3 new tilt shift lenses this week, Canon also dropped a 85mm f1.4 IS bomb this week! Now they do have a faster f1.2 lens already but this one has 4 stops of Image Stabilisation and will be available for $1599,- in mid November.

Lexar has been acquired by a Chinese flash storage company

Back in June Micron announced it was shutting down it’s Lexar business unit. This week Longsys announced they have acquired the Lexar trademark and branding rights. Now I’m not sure what this means for Lexar.. Will the brand degrade in quality with cheaper Chinese stuff or is Longsys at a quality level that is on par with Lexar at the moment or maybe even better? Time will tell!

Ricoh reveals new Theta v 360 Camera

Ricoh has revealed a brand new version of its Theta 360-degree camera: The Theta V, which upgrades the video capture quality to 4K resolution, adds live streaming support, and immersive “surround” sound audio recording. I’m really quite interested in the Spacial Audio! That must be great.. Oh and it will e on sale for $429.95 today!

DJI Releases Mavic Pro Platinum and Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian

DJI came in this week and released both a new version of their Mavic Pro Platinum ($1099.-) and a new Phantom 4 Pro black version called Obsidian ($1499.-). The Mavic Pro Platinum flies longer than the normal Mavic Pro and is apparently a lot quieter. To me it feel a bit like DJI did not really innovate much with this release, but to be fair, they own the market anyways, so they can hold off for a while!

Sony’s tiny RX0 is made for VR and multi-camera work

It’s tiny, it shoots 4K, 250(!!) fps in full HD and is waterproof to 33 feet! it’s also $700.- and aimed at the VR and remote camera shooting markets. it has a 1 inch, 15.4 megapixel sensor with a fixed 24mm f4 lens. Yes, that means it gives the same kind of image quality as the highly popular RX100 Mark V!

What 15 years of writing videography contracts taught me

Videography contracts define outcomes and set expectations; but they also provide protection—protection for you, your client, and for the art you create. I can’t state how important contracts are when you are a freelancer. It is absolutely vital that you get onboard with these to protect yourself and make sure you get payed.

How rental gear got destroyed during the solar eclipse

When you are from another part of the world or perhaps have been living under a rock for the past week, you might have missed the spectacular solar eclipse that happened across the USA. This meant, even after warning their customers that lens rentals had quite a few damaged camera’s and lenses that came back, showing the power of the almighty sun.
